Lumiere = Light

  Watching a street performer eating fire, I get seized with a powerful desire to eat it myself, too. It is not that I want to make a challenge because such a performance is dangerous and is not what everyone can do, but the reason why I am attracted by the act is that it is an attempt to physically eat fire which I feel is pure "energy" - though it may be an impossible wish in this governed-by-materials world.

However, this conception is not an eccentric idea. We cook to eat every day. Since dishes are created as a result of encounter between cooking ingredients and fire (heat), it can be said that in fact we usually eat fire, although when we eat resultant dishes, fire itself has disappeared and we can only eat its trace.

  "Lumiere" is a work with which I try to connect such a performance and our daily eating act. It is an attempt to reveal the wonder of eating by physically eating fire.

リュミエール＝光

　大道芸人が炎を食べるパフォーマンスを観ると、私自身も炎を食べてみたいという思いに駆られてしまいます。たた、このパフォーマンスが危険なもので、誰もが出来るものではないという理由から挑戦してみたいと思うようになったのではありません。

私がこの行為に惹かれるのは、炎というエネルギーそのものを食べようとするところにあります。物質の支配するこの世界で、それは叶わぬ願いではありますが、けして不可能とも言い切れないようにも思うのです。

なぜなら、私たちは日々食事を摂る為に料理をしますが、料理とは食材に炎（熱）が加わる事によって生まれるため、実際に普段から炎を食べているとも言えるからです。ただし、出来上がった料理を食べる時には、炎そのものの姿はなく、その痕跡を食べる事しか出来ないのですが。

このパフォーマンスと日常の食事を繋ごうとするものが「リュミエール」です。そしてそれは食べる事の不思議さを引き出そうとする試みなのです。
